So, you’re looking to change your life and improve your health, are you? Well, a juice fast could be just the kickstart your body needs! I’ll admit, consuming nothing but juice for several days can seem quite daunting. However, I can promise you that if you go in prepared, you will survive your first juice fast.
One of the best pieces of advice I can give to help you have a successful juice fast is to start small. There’s no need to commit to a 30 day fast right from the jump. Just take it a day at a time! When really tough days come around, and they will, the last thing you want on your mind is how much longer you have to go. The first 3 days are usually the hardest. But if you can make it through 3 days, 7 days will be a breeze. Now that you’ve gone a week, you can go another, and if you can fast for 2 weeks… Well, you get the idea. Wake up every morning and commit to fasting for that day. Before you know it, you’ll be at the end of your fast!
Is a holiday feast around the corner? Do have that company potluck this Friday? Friends are in town for the week? It’s extremely important that you take things like this into consideration. Trust me, you don’t want the temptation of a delicious spread, or a night out on the town, when you’re midjuice fast. Do yourself a favor and avoid any social events that could derail you. Another thing to keep in mind is that you will have to adjust your daily schedule. The time it takes to wash and prep your produce, run everything through the juicer, and clean up after, all adds up. You’re going to have to carve out time from your day to get your juice made. For some of you, that isn’t a problem. But most of you have busy lives and are going to have to get up earlier or go to bed a little later. You could also make a large enough batch of juice to last you a couple of days. Just be sure to store your juice in sealed, airtight mason jars.
Clean Up Your Diet Beforehand
Juice fasts affect everybody differently. Some feel lethargic and experience flu like symptoms. Others are full of energy and only have to battle the initial feelings of hunger. Your state of health is going to play a large part in how you feel when you begin your own fast. If you consume a lot of meats, processed foods, and sugars, you may want to clean up your diet before you start. Spend a couple of weeks eating more fruits and vegetables. This might not make your detox an easy process but it will certainly help.
Relax and Take It Easy
This falls in line with being smart about when you schedule your fast. You want to avoid any strenuous or stressful work for at least the first few days. That’s not to say you should sit around and do nothing though! Sitting at home feeling bad about yourself is only a recipe for disaster. Treat yourself to a nice bath, take a walk or start that meditation practice you’ve always wanted to try. You’re doing something great for your body, treat yourself for it!
Congratulations! I’ve been rooting for you all along and now you’ve made it! Go ahead, treat yourself to a 3 course meal… Just kidding, don’t do that. Stuffing your face is the worst thing you can do when your juice fast has come to an end. You want to avoid putting strain on your digestive system which could result in stomach aches and pains. Feel free to eat some fruit (you’ve definitely earned it!) but I suggest that you ease back into eating solid foods. Smoothies are a great way to do this. I like to keep juicing a few more days while also blending my pulp into a smoothie. Mix the pulp with a little bit of almond milk, ice and nut butter and you’re good to go!

Keep your produce bags. Those plastic bags you find in the produce section? Save them. They fit nicely inside the pulp receptacle and make cleanup a breeze. While we’re talking about pulp... Don’t ever throw it away! You can compost it or make all sorts of delicious snacks and treats.
Invest in a quality juicer: Breville and Cuisinart make excellent juicers. You want to be sure that you have a juicer that can withstand the amount of use that a juice fast calls for.
Find an “accountabilibuddy.” When you juice with a partner, you can encourage and keep each other accountable. Consider asking your spouse, significant other, best friend, or even a coworker, to join you in your juice fast.
Also, don’t tell the entire world about what you’re setting out to do. You just want to tell the people that you know will encourage you along the way.
